Sustainable Development Week: eco-pasturing, sheep replace lawnmowers at Veolog.

From May 30 to June 5, 2017, the European Week for Sustainable Development is taking place. This year we decided to present one of our Sustainable Development initiatives: eco-pasturing. Sheep have replaced lawnmowers for the upkeep of some of Veolog's green spaces.

What is eco-pasturing? It's an alternative method of landscape maintenance in urban and suburban areas. From May to October, a flock of sheep takes up residence on one of our storage warehouses to graze the lawn. As the name suggests, this practice is environmentally friendly, reducing noise, pollution and the use of chemicals. As well as protecting existing biodiversity, it brings a country feel to our logistics site. Eco-pasturing also represents a real reduction in the cost of maintaining green spaces. However, this initiative requires a few adaptations in order to welcome and protect the animals properly. With the help of our landscape architect Artopia and the breeder, we installed an electric fence, a rot-proof Douglas wood shelter and drinking troughs.
For six months, the breeder will make weekly visits to ensure the animals' good health, and provide curative and preventive veterinary care. Not forgetting regular checks on the fencing to make sure it hasn't deteriorated.

Ecological and efficient, this initiative is also a great success with our employees!
